At work I don't do layouts, but we work with techs who use Allegro. Since I have had access I tried using Allegro, but due to lack of tutorials and documentation I gave up. I signed up for CircuitMaker and was instantly floored by the comparable user friendliness of it - especially footprint making. What I don't like about Circuit Maker is that you don't own your designs and everything is public.

So Circuit Studio would be the way to go. But man it is expensive for 3.5k base then 500$ a year.

Does anyone know if they have student prices? Altium is also a professional level tool which you can mention on your resume. Lots of places use it, and other places will still see that knowledge as valuable (more so than most of the other cheap/free options which have more of a 'hobbyist vibe').

It's very nice overall, and pretty well priced vs the other big players. Sure, it's a bit more complicated for basic stuff than most cheap/free packages, but it's also way more powerful, and that'll really come in handy as your designs get more complicated/advanced. If you want good & cheap training for Altium (instead of the pricey training Altium has, like all ECAD vendors), then look at FEDEVEL academy. You can also check Robert Ferranec's youtube channel before spending money. I use CircuitStudio quite a bit.

I've also used Eagle, OrCAD/Allegro, and Upverter as well as full-up Altium. Altium is, in my opinion, the best PCB design tool on the market (which is depressing considering how bad it is in some ways, but I digress).

CircuitStudio is exactly what you'd expect - a sales pitch for Altium. It's good enough to do 90% of what you want, but that last 10% is a real bear. Some notable missing features include multi-drag (to move multiple components/traces you need to cut and paste), remapping hotkeys (hotkeys in general are crippled, it's a very mouse-heavy program), and.DbLib support (important for professionals). The schematic capture is pretty reasonable, with only a few minor annoyances. Depending on what you're doing, the layout tool may be fine for you, but it's got definite weaknesses. I guess what I'm saying is - I recommend you learn the Altium ecosystem, because it's great, but CircuitStudio has some serious flaws, and if you can get educational Altium pricing, you should do that instead.
